Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education

The body of work Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais developed is known as the Feldenkrais Method.

The Feldenkrais Method uses the entire body as a means for improving the quality of life, not by pushing the muscles to do more and more but by engaging the whole individual in unique and novel ways that call the brain to be fully alive and available in every increasing spirals of possibilities.

Movement, awareness, sensation and the environment results are the vehicles we use in this work. Because of the attention to this loop, the nervous system is stimulated in ways that deeply affect both the emotional and physical life.

As a client or student, there are two ways to experience the work: individual sessions known as Functional Integration® and group classes which are referred to as Awareness Through Movement®. In private or group classes you will explore the range of working in the imagination or the breath, functional aspects such reading, reaching and standing up; or even preparations for better running, jumping, judo rolls or headstands. Injury recovery is also a common and appropriate application of this work. You can read much more about the Feldenkrais Method at the national guild website. See our blog for links to interesting and short videos on the Feldenkrais Method.

Programs We Offer

We host one to two advanced trainings each year that draw on the Feldenkrais Method. This next year, we will be kicking off our Protocol to Process series which draws heavily on the Method and is open to the vast array of health care professionals and somatic educators.

The Feldenkrais Method enhances the skill set of the health care professional in two important areas:

  1. Ways to work with patients so that it does not injure the clinician thereby allowing the clinician a more fulfilling and longer professional life
  2. Unique ways to work with patients who do not respond to traditional protocols or who are seeking ways of improving that are beyond the typical therapeutic approaches.
